Skills4Sea’s online learning and assessment platform is ready for controlled piloting with maritime education and training (MET) institutions. Maritime students, cadets, seafarers and instructors are invited to try the available modules free of charge and help shape the next stage of development.

The Erasmus+ project focuses on the human skills behind effective maritime operations: communication, teamwork, leadership, situational awareness and decision-making. The platform brings these skills into practical situations where learners consider what is happening, choose a course of action and explain their reasoning.

Five practical maritime scenarios

The platform currently brings together five scenario-based modules covering watchkeeping and handover; technical failure and emergency coordination; speaking up and operational conflict; safety pressure and near-miss reporting; and automation ambiguity and human oversight.

Learners move through an initial knowledge check, concepts and case material, interactive activities, practical scenario tasks, a final knowledge test and reflection. Saved progress and lecturer review support both individual learning and use within an organised class or training programme.

The work adapts the existing methodology for online use, improving the learning flow and assessment guidance. The refined version is a concrete focus for testing as the partnership continues reviewing the wider programme

Help test the platform in real training settings

Under Work Package 3, the planned pilot aims to involve their target group, which includes instructors, across three to four MET institutions. Maritime universities, academies, vocational colleges and specialist training centres are welcome to express interest in joining.

Participating institutions will arrange a learner group, nominate a facilitator and coordinate access to the reviewed modules. Learners will complete assigned activities and give feedback; instructors will review the relevance of the scenarios, clarity of tasks and usefulness of the assessment and feedback. Testing will also examine navigation and access on desktop and mobile devices.

This is an opportunity to influence the platform through actual training use. Feedback will guide improvements to instructions, activities, assessment and the user experience as the modules continue to develop.

The project reaches its first anniversary in November 2026, with the focus now on putting its learning resources into use and learning from participants’ experience.
